The DKP 'top 10 gems' at the Photography Show in 2015
I am sure by now we have all seen the big magazines and companies talking about what to see at the show and we have heard all the stuff we SHOULD go and see but as with always at these shows some of the hidden gems can be the most wonderful stuff. What else is there that we should go and check out….
This year I am going to the show as a photographer and doing a couple of talks (SmugMug and Fotospeed – check this blog for timings). So here are the things I will be going to have a look at and the people I want to go and check out.
New lenses from Fuji….
OK, not quite a hidden gem but if you have not seen or had a hands on with the new 16-55 f2.8 XF lens or the new 50-140mm then this should be your very first point of call.
They have one 24mm in the UK and I think it is Canon fit and it will be at the show, go have a look, hopefully they will also have a Nikon fit on there too which I shall try and borrow to play with. They will also have the 35mm & 50mm Art lenses, these are well worth having a look at. The hidden gem is the 105mm, check out the price this lens will be on sale for at the show…. you might be shocked.
3) Pratik Naik.
Last year when I was working on the show Pratik was on my MUST have list, but was unable to fly him over from the USA. It just so happens that this year he is the UK and I have found a way to bring him to the show. He will be taking over my 11am slot on the Fotospeed stand and re-editing an image of mine. This guy is world class and you will of seen his work in ELLE & VOGUE as he works with the worlds very best photographers. This really is a total MUST SEE if you are into your retouching. Pratik is also a Senior Staff Writer for Photography blog and website FSTOPPERS.
4) Kirsty Mitchell.
Check out the talk Kirsty will be doing on the Nikon stand – Wonderland – The Creation of Fantasy for Real. Their will be two talks on the 24th and one on the 23rd, both starting at 1045 at the Nikon Stand. Another – NOT TO BE MISSED talk.
5) Richard Curtis (Adobe).
Richard to me is Mr Adobe – check out his full list of when and where he will be – I am sure he might be one of the busiest people talking at the show this year. Talks range from simple – whats in the Adobe cloud to more complex things like looking at where Adobe are with 3D printing.
6) 3 Legged Thing.
There was something about chickens…. I remember seeing a tweet and an instagram image from CEO Danny Lenihan. The truck they had packed looked more like they were setting up to go to a rock and roll gig, not a Photography Show.. Either way.. they are such an amazing bunch of people and some amazing kit.. I heard things of new kit too…. the 3LT Stand will be the first place I head to when I get there on Friday to check it all out.
7) Tim Pellat Technical Editor Hungry Eye magazine.
Hungry Eye is an amazing magazine and the only magazine I read cover to cover. Tim will be at the Film Makers Stage at 12:30 on the 21st (Sat) talking on the “exploration of the key points to consider when making the transition from stills to moving image.” Might be also worth checking out the Panasonic stage and the new GF cameras if the move into film is looking like your thing.
8) Simeon & Victoria.
Last year I had both of these amazing artists on the Catwalk Stage, which this year, is the Street Stage. Simoen is doing a whole range of talks across the whole show, best to check out the link to see where is on which days – Simon’s list – CLICK HERE. Victoria Grech is bringing her Fusion of Video and Stills and giving two talks. CLICK HERE for more info about where and when Victoria is going to be
9) Tom Barnes.
Toms is a bit of a hero of mine, I heard that there was some kind of a cake thing and a whole lot of chaos going on at the G-TECH stand then a demo or lighting talk over at the Profoto stage. Please do check out Tom’s website and you will see why you should go and listen to him talk. http://tombarnes.co/ – Tom is the REAL DEAL…
10) ME !! I am talking at the show too !
I am doing a whole bunch of talks during the few days at the show – you can check out the times here – http://blog.davekaipiper.com/smug-mug-fotospeed-photography-show/.
Come and check out my thoughts on retouching at the Fotospeed stand and my workflow when photographing people on the Smug Mug Stand.
