Understanding Helmut Newton (North Wales)
A few weeks go, I was asked to attend the Cambrian Photography show. The last couple of years I have just conducted some seminars for Sigma about shooting portraits and then some Adobe based workflow things but this year Stephanie and I decided to also run a workshop on the following Sunday.
As my own work is evolving styles, I like to spend time following and educating myself in a number of photographers – one of them being Helmet Newton. We thought this would be great concept for a workshop, thus the Understanding Newton was put on the following Sunday after the Cambrian Photography Photo & Optic Show Summer 2015. We had a fantastic day and feedback has been amazing. Below are a few images taken by the attendees on the day. The workshops were split into two elements, the first part was pretty much a little look at Newton’s work, who he is and the style that he works too.
A few weeks ago, Stephanie had bought me two stunning Newton books, we took them to the show and used them as part of the sessions. The delegates picked some images and then had the challenge to recreate them with our stunning model. We had pre-styled Peliroja in a number Masion Close Lingerie sets to match the sort of european nature & lingerie that Helmet liked to use.
Much thought was put into shooting the wider images & context. We spoke about the power of photography and how nudity can impact on the viewer in different ways. Context is key when creating provocative images.
Helmut also was a master at the details in an image. We looked at the ways he worked with people and created such a powerful persona in the photography and arts world.
Over the next few weeks we will be announcing details of some more ‘Understanding Newton Workshops’ plus a new workshop ‘Understanding Herb Ritts’ – Feel free to sign up to our Ideas & Images newsletter here – http://ideasandimages.smugmug.com/Newsletter
